VFW Post 4126 in Mio is selling tickets for a cash 50/50 drawing for its annual fundraiser. Members will be selling tickets Friday, Sept. 26 at Family Fare in Mio from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Veterans and community members gathered for an inaugural open house at the Oscoda County Veterans Affairs Office Saturday, Aug. 16. Outside near the veteran’s monument, VA board members cooked hot dogs and a bounce house outfitted with a sprinkler helped a few kids keep cool in the heat of mid-day.

Last Saturday was National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day, a day to honor those who served during what is called the Forgotten War. Over the years I’ve tried to learn more about this war and have written about it from time to time. A search of the archives revealed that I wrote an article and a column specifically about the war in Korea and mentioned it six other times in columns.

The honor guard of American Legion Post 162 in Luzerne honored the last Civil War veteran to be buried in Oscoda County July 19.

Veteran Phil Wideman, of Mio, received a Quilt of Valor from Old Jail Quilters. Wideman was nominated by one of his father’s hospice nurses, who is from Big Rapids.

We’re proud to welcome Brandon Anderson to the Veterans Affairs Board for his first term of service in this role. Anderson has already proven a strong voice for the veteran community.
