The appearance of the Mio AuSable Schools cafeteria has been dramatically enhanced by the addition of a large mural. The work was done by Dave Wiley Graphics. Wiley used to live in Ogemaw County, but he lives in Georgia now.
Food service director Mary Miller had seen and admired Wiley’s work in other school gyms in the area. “I’d see his signature,” she said. “I thought I’d give him a try.”
The mural was paid for with food service funds. It is the first phase of improving and updating the cafeteria. “We have a healthy fund balance,” Miller said. “This is an allowable cost through Michigan Department of Education.”
Some of the painting was done in the artist’s workshop; the rest was completed on site. Wiley had agreed to do the mural and have it completed before graduation. He finished it in time, in spite of an unexpected hospitalization.
“He got behind, but he did not want to disappoint me,” Miller said. “He was here Monday to Thursday, finishing the painting.”
Wiley completed the painting, adding his signature, just before the senior class finished graduation practice. This mural is dedicated to the Class of 2024.
