How NMCAC supports children and families
April is nationally recognized as Child Abuse Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness about the importance of protecting children and strengthening families. At Northern Michigan Children’s Assessment Center (NMCAC), we are committed to providing support, advocacy, and healing services for children affected by abuse.
Child abuse and neglect affect thousands of children each year, leaving lasting emotional, physical, and psychological impacts. Prevention starts with awareness and education, but it also requires action. This month, we encourage everyone to join us in supporting children by learning about the resources available and advocating for those in need.
At NMCAC, we provide a safe, child-friendly environment where children who have experienced abuse can share their stories with trained professionals. Our team collaborates with law enforcement, Children’s Protective Services, and prosecutors to ensure children receive the care they need without being re-traumatized during investigations. Our specialized services include:
● Forensic Interviews – Trained professionals conduct interviews in a comfortable setting to help children share their experiences in a way that is safe and legally sound.
● Advocacy Services – Our advocates provide emotional support and connect families with community resources.
● Medical Services – We offer medical exams and sexual assault forensic examinations to ensure children’s health and well-being.
● Trauma Therapy – Our master’s level, trauma-focused trained therapists provide evidence-based counseling to help children heal and regain their sense of safety.
● Prevention and Education – We work with schools, parents, and community members to educate them on recognizing and preventing child abuse.
Since 2014, NMCAC has helped over 3,000 children and families in Oscoda, Ogemaw, Roscommon, Crawford, Iosco, and Otsego counties.
This April, we invite you to be part of the solution. Whether by learning the signs of abuse, supporting organizations like NMCAC, or advocating for policies that protect children, everyone can play a role in prevention. We also encourage you to show your support by wearing blue on Fridays throughout April to raise awareness for child abuse prevention.
Together, we can create a safer, healthier future for children.
