Ken Chapman,
Keeper of the Flags
One of the best feelings I’ve had was seeing the U.S. flag flying in the wind near the docks in San Diego Harbor. It occurred on my arrival from my tour of duty in the far East.
I feel that the flag is an investment and a personal expression. The flags life can be extended with a little care. Federal standards for the use of the flag is 90 days.
Care for the flag:
• Fly the flag from sunrise to sunset
• Do not fly the flag in inclement weather
• Do not fly the flag in high winds
• When a flag is wet, spread it out and let it dry
• Inspect both the pole and flag for sharp edges
• If dirty, a flag can be washed in mild soap and air dried.
• If a flag starts to fray, sew it as needed, ensuring that the flag’s size does not change.
• If a flag becomes faded, replace it.
Retired flags can be taken to a retirement boxes (a re-purposed mailbox) near the entrance of Family Fare in Mio.
