Stop by the Steiner

By Amy Hensel

The Steiner Museum opened for the 2024 season with a pancake breakfast Saturday, May 25, 8 – 11 a.m.

This event marks the opening of the museum for the summer–fall season. Steiner Museum is a pioneer and logging museum dedicated to preserving the history of Oscoda County and the pioneers who settled there.

Oscoda County Commissioner Libby Marsh, who represents the county on the Steiner Museum board, was at the May 16 meeting of Big Creek Township Board of Trustees to give a museum update.

“We spent a lot of time developing a budget and making a plan for 2024, and we’re going to stick to the plan,” Marsh said. “Right now, we are working on our inventory. We have more than 15,000 items. Our plan is to revamp the museum, but that has to start with accounting for every single item. I’ve had lots of volunteers coming in to help.”

The board is taking steps to make the museum self-sufficient.

“That’s not something that’s going to happen overnight,” Marsh said. “With the things that we’re planning on doing for 2024, you are relay going to see a change in 2025.”

The museum is opening a gift shop which will be ready for opening weekend.

“I would encourage you to stop out and see the difference,” Marsh said. “The annual pancake breakfast is a great event and then you can see the gift shop.”

A new edition of the Wilderness Chronicle, a publication which has been out of print for decade, will be available to purchase at the pancake breakfast.

The Steiner Museum is located at 1980 Reber Road, between Fairview and Comins.
