The Farm Kitchen bakery and deli opens at last.

MIO — Oscoda County residents and visitors turned out Jan. 2 to have a first look at The Farm Kitchen. The community has been following the progress of the red-roofed building at the corner of  M-33 and Kittle Road north of downtown Mio. Five years ago a group of seven or eight families got the idea of a dairy processing facility to create a sustainable system for local dairy farmers to market their products throughout Michigan. Construction of the facility began in 2018.

The Farm Kitchen segment of the enterprise was added to increase interest. “We felt it would compliment the dairy products and give customers more reason to stop,”  said Edward Yoder. It is co-owned by Yoder, Ruth Ann Bontrager and Mark Yoder. They had hoped to have the store open last May but there were delays.“Everything took more time than anticipated to get it up and running,” said Yoder.

Bontrager was invited because of her experience and interest in the food busuness. She has operated a bakery and a retail business. The bakery has five employees, two of which are full-time. The bakery produces bread, pies, cookies and cinnamon rolls and fresh brewed coffee to go. Customers can buy made-to-order sandwiches on fresh bread as well as favorites such as potato salad, macaroni salad and broccoli cauliflower salad. “They are all homeade,” said Bontrager. The deli will also offer a soup of the day made from scratch. The Farm Kitchen carries frozen grass-fed meats, maple products, preserves, coffee, snacks and treats. Customers can look forward to locally produced dairy products, including ice cream, when the creamery phase of the business is ready to go.

Visitors from as far away as California, Hawaii and New York stopped by the first day. “Our first day was above and beyond what was expected,” said Yoder.

“It took time but I’m glad to see them open,” said John Bozek, an early visitor who lives nearby.

The Farmers Creamery is located at 50 Kittle Road in Mio and is open Monday through Saturday 6:30 a.m.-6:00 p.m. The phone number is 989-826-8666.
