Smokey Bear visits Mio AuSable students to announce poster contest winners

MIO — After Mio AuSable fourth-graders submitted artwork for the third annual Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl poster contests, Smokey Bear himself came to the school to announce the winners May 17.

Huron National Forest representatives accompanied Smokey to the school, where the fourth-graders were assembled and the winners were announced and honored in front of their peers.

This year’s Smokey Bear contest celebrated the icon’s 75th birthday, and posters were supposed to reflect the idea that “Only you can prevent wildfires.” The Woodsy Owl contest had the theme of “Lend a hand, care for the land.”

This year’s winners for the Smokey Bear contest were Olivia Wilt and Rya Wiltse, in first and second respectively. Winners of the Woodsy Owl contest were Angellaya Burden and Kaitlyn Uren, in first and second respectively. Honorable mentions were Cameron Gould and Grady Barringer.
