Sheriff department raises hundreds for local scholarships

MIO — After a month of growth, the Oscoda County Sheriff Department is proudly showing off the results from its No-Shave November fundraiser.

Sheriff Kevin Grace said with help from local residents the department raised roughly $350 that it will put toward scholarships for both a Mio AuSable and Fairview Area Schools student. The scholarships will be given to students pursuing a career in law enforcement.

“Thanks to anyone who donated, and thanks to everyone for putting up with our burly looks,” Grace said. “I’m proud of our staff and the community for helping us get a local kid in law enforcement.”

The previous scholarship gifted by the department went to Fairview student Joshua Esch. He is currently serving an internship at the department and is enrolled in the criminal justice program at Kirtland Community College.

Grace said this will not be the only fundraiser contributing to the scholarship this year. He said to watch for another as the holidays approach, and that there will be various other activities like raffles throughout the year to contribute to the scholarships as well.
