Project Connect returns to Mio

Promoting local resources for those in need

MIO — After being hosted in Fairview, Project Connect will be returning to Mio AuSable Schools June 19 for this year’s event, which will showcase local resources available to help those in need.

The program began just short of three years ago in Mio when members of local charitable groups got together in an attempt to get the word out to residents about all that is offered to those in need in Oscoda County. Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Community Resource Coordinator Alice Stone said last year roughly 200 Oscoda County families were served at the event. Her hope is to see that increase again this year.

Stone has been involved with the program since its inception. She said this year the event will be even larger than the previous two years in terms of vendors.

“It seems that there will be more vendors this year,” Stone said. “Sometimes, people think we don’t have resources, but really there are quite a few services here that can help residents.”

Stone said the program is essentially a one-stop shop for residents to find out the type of assistance offered in the area. The program will function much like it did last year, where participants will check in with different vendors, and if they visit enough of them they will receive a gift of groceries and recipe cards of what could be prepared with the food given. Stone said sometimes the food offered is not what residents may be used to, so the recipe cards will inform them how to use some of the more niche ingredients offered.

Stone mentioned some of the vendors this year that she is particularly excited about, like a local hair salon that will be offering free haircuts to children. She also said wellness groups will be present to take attendees’ blood pressure or test their hearing.

To participate, visit Mio AuSable Schools June 19 between the hours of 3 and 6 p.m.
