Project Connect increases number of people served

Posted

MIO — This year Project Connect increased the number of people served by more than 100, and distributed well over 10 pallets full of food to area residents.

Event organizer Deb Nurse said altogether at least 450-people registered at the event and visited the 50 vendors that participated. She said this is exactly what she was hoping to see happen.

“We saw huge growth and better understanding of what the event is for.” Nurse said.

Food was donated by multiple local and regional food banks including Together We Can Food Pantry, St. Bart’s Community Food Pantry, and the Eastern Michigan Food Bank. Roughly five pallets each of vegetables, fruit and dairy products were available for residents to take home. Volunteers from the Michigan State University Extension were also preparing recipes with the food provided to serve as ideas for what residents could make with the food provided.

Nurse said District Health Department 2 was at the event as well doing vaccinations and various health tests. Nurse said the organization distributed 22 Hepatitis A vaccinations, conducted 12 hearing screens and 11 vision screens.

Project Connect was also able to distribute 18 car seats and properly secure them for families with young children. Those were given away free of charge. In addition members of Mio Masonic Lodge 596 were able to register 64 children through it’s Michigan Child ID program. Nurse said that is far more than the organization has registered in previous years at the event.

Project Connect will return to Fairview Area Schools next year.
