Pro-life advocates participate in 5th Annual March for Life

MIO — St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Mio hosted a pro-life march through town Jan. 24. It is part of a national campaign through the Right to Life organization. This is the fifth year Mio has participated in the March.

“We’ve been doing the march for five years,” said Joe Gibala. “I was approached by some Knights of Columbus out of Lewiston who were interested in getting involved with the pro-life movement, and I got involved that way. Myself, along with Dave Lashley, organized the march that first year, and every year since. We have also just recently started a Right to Life Oscoda County chapter, but it’s still in its infancy.”

Participants in the march were treated to hot cocoa, tea, coffee and doughnuts before the walk as Lisa Goss gave an opening speech. During her speech, Goss stated, “We in the pro-life movement know that when you disrespect one life, you disrespect all life. We also know that life is sacred and needs to be protected from conception until natural death.”

Those who were unable to walk with the marchers, stayed at the church for a time of fellowship and prayer. There were almost 50 people in attendance and participants were served hot soup, sandwiches, fruit and dessert after the march was complete.

“I truly believe in the right to life movement. I do believe life should be respected from the womb to natural death. It is a worthy cause.” said Julie Salinski when asked why she wanted to participate in the march.

The Right to Life of Oscoda County meets the fourth Tuesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. at the Oscoda County Library. They are in the process of creating a board, although a president is still needed. For anyone interested in joining the Right to Life group, Gibala encourages attending a meeting.
