Nor-East’r Music & Art Festival to return for 17th year

MIO — The 17th annual Nor-East’r Music & Art Festival is coming back to the Oscoda County Fairgrounds this weekend.

The festival will feature three days full of live music, vendors, food, camping, art and countless other ways to enjoy some family-friendly fun in Northern Michigan.

Event organizer Lisa Jacob said not much has changed from the previous year for the festivities, but that’s a good thing.

“A lot of the artists are returning who have been here before, and they are awesome,” Jacob said. “But we also have a lot of young, new artists this year as well.”

Jacob said this year the Nor-East’r is attempting to reach out more to young people, hoping to ingrain the importance of the arts in them.

“It seems like they don’t know much about the festival,” Jacob said of younger residents. “So we’re trying to bring them out and show them just how important music is.”

Part of that youth outreach will be showcased through the annual guitars for kids giveaway that will see a handful of guitars go to young event goers. There will also be something called the instrument petting zoo this year, in which children will be able to pick up and play some instruments in order to find out what it’s like to be in a rock band. Jacob said that’s just a couple ways the Nor-East’r crew likes to give back to participants. She said especially with the lack of music programs in our local schools, it’s even more important to get instruments in the hands of children as early as possible.

The usual three stages will return this year for the event; however, there will also be a fourth venue known as the Jam Tent. Jacob said it will be located near the entrance and participants can drop in and play together at any time throughout the weekend.

The festival will be held June 7-9 at 1889 Caldwell Rd., Mio. As of now tickets are only available at the door and cost $95 for an adult pass for the entire weekend.
