No injuries or deaths in explosion at Grayling particleboard facility

GRAYLING — An explosion and fire reported at ARAUCO Grayling Particleboard Plant around 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 30 resulted in no injuries or deaths, according to Crawford County Sheriff Shawn Kraycs.

“We were pretty concerned there would be some casualties, but fortunately when we got out there, there wasn’t,” Kraycs said. “They had a count on everyone and no one was injured.”

A dryer vat used for wood particles was the source of the explosion and ensuing fire, though Kraycs said the cause is unknown at this time. He said the fire was contained shortly after emergency services arrived on scene.

“It didn’t take them long to get in there and get things under control,” Kraycs said.

Emergency responders on scene included Frederick Twp. Fire Department, Beaver Creek Twp. Fire Department, South Branch Twp. Fire Department, Grayling Department of Public Safety, Michigan State Police, Crawford County Sheriff’s Department and Mobile Medical Response EMS.
