Mio cancer charity 5K canceled

MIO — The 2019 Badges for a Cause 5K charity run/walk has been canceled, but is slated to return next year.

In previous years hundreds of people have participated in the event. It has raised thousands of dollars through T-shirt sales, silent auctions and event sponsorship. That money was always donated to a nonprofit group that benefits cancer victims. This would have been the 12th year in a row the event was held.

Oscoda County Sheriff and event organizer Kevin Grace said the cancellation this year was a difficult but necessary choice.

“Honestly, we ran out of time,” Grace said. “We hated to do it, but it was in the best interest of everyone. We wouldn’t have been able to do it the way we used to, the way we wanted it too.”

Grace said as of July 5 the organizers still hadn’t gone looking for sponsors and the event was approaching too quickly. He said organizers are going to begin planning next year’s event well in advance in order to ensure it returns at the level former attendees expect. He said the event will return around the second week of August next year.

Our family supported this and many other charities around the area until our family came under attack by rogue gang of cops and a vindictive prosecutor. However we promise a nice early donation after Oscoda county pays out for the damage these folks have have done.
