Luzerne American Legion in midst of small renovation

Fish Fry to return in August

LUZERNE — The Luzerne American Legion will be receiving a fresh coat of paint inside, and some new light fixtures as part of a small renovation aimed at revitalizing the facility.

The Legion was forced to cancel this month’s fish fry in order to dedicate more time to getting the renovations finished. Legion member Bob Whittaker said the post is spending roughly $2,000 all together. In addition to the new paint for the walls, the ceiling will also receive a fresh coat. He said the new light fixtures will also improve the look of the facility as they are being replaced with high quality LED light bulbs that will be put on a dimmer switch.

Whittaker said the labor required is all being provided for free by Legion members. He said so far everything looks very good, and they expect to be finished by Aug. 2 in order to be prepared for a memorial service Aug. 5.

In addition to the current renovations, Whittaker said the Legion has also applied for a grant through Home Depot for further improvements. He said if the Legion receives the grant, the money would be spent on new carpet for the facility, new flooring for the bathrooms and new equipment for the kitchen. He said he is unsure when the Legion will find out if it received the grant, or how much money it would receive if it does.

The monthly Legion fish fry will return Aug. 16 from 5-8 p.m. Whittaker said the event has grown vastly since it was brought back roughly a year ago, serving more meals at each dinner than the last.
