Local quilting group to plant veteran’s memorial tree on new county building site

MIO — The Oscoda County Quilts of Valor and Meo Mio Stitchers are looking forward to the completion of the new county building construction as the group was just approved to plant a veteran’s memorial tree on the grounds.

Stitchers representative Lora Freer said the group is dedicated to veterans and tries to honor them in any way possible.

“Quilts of Valor is a group that does everything it can for veterans,” Freer said. “Through the last two years we’ve been able to give out 20 quilts to veterans.”

Freer, who used to be the Oscoda County District Forester, said the tree planted would be a White or Norway Spruce. She said it will cost roughly $300-$500 as the group wants the tree to be a few years old when it is planted. The county will not be paying for any of the costs associated with the tree.

Chairman Kyle Yoder asked Freer if she would consider planting the tree in the fall if the building is complete. She said that should work for this type of tree.

“For a tree like this, the fall or the spring would be the best time (to plant) it,” Freer said. “You can really plant a tree at any time of the year as long as you’re willing to do the maintenance.”

Freer said she would work with the county when planting the tree to ensure it fits the counties landscaping plans. The commissioners voted unanimously to allow the groups to plant the tree, Commissioner Jackie Bondar was not present at the meeting to vote.
