Lions Club to host fishing day for seniors

Posted

MIO — The Mio Lions Club is planning to provide seniors with a fun outdoor experience during its annual Senior Free Fishing Day this Friday.

Lion Club member Randy Booth said the organization has been hosting the event for around 15 years, but it started more than 30 years ago through the Northeast Michigan Sportsmen’s Club.

He said the local nursing homes bring seniors to the event, and they are provided food, a fishing experience and a ride on a pontoon boat.

“A lot of (the nursing home residents) say it’s their favorite day of the year,” Booth said. “They love to come out for the boat ride and have a picnic.”

He said Twin Lakes Marina has provided the pontoon boat each year and has been instrumental in the event.

All area seniors are welcome to attend, which runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 23 at the handicapped fishing pier at Mio Pond.
