Lions Club inviting kids to fish for free at Mio Pond

DNR offering free fishing, state park entry and ORV riding June 8-9

Posted

MIO — The state’s Free Fishing Weekend is June 8-9, allowing anybody to fish without a license, and the Mio Lions Club is once again taking advantage of this opportunity to provide a fun time for kids June 8.

Kids are invited to gather at the wheelchair-accessible pier at Mio Pond from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to try for not only a fish but also a prize. Event coordinator Randy Booth said each child can draw a token for a prize from an assortment of rods and reels, fishing gear and more. Trophies will also be given to those who catch the most fish in each category, including ages 10 and younger and 11-15, both boys and girls.

Booth said poles, tackle and bait will also be available for kids to use at the event, though they are also welcome to bring their own.

Forest Service staff members will again be present to help out, with a wildlife biologist measuring each child’s fish.

A free hot dog lunch will also be provided.

Booth said the Free Fishing Day, in its 33rd year, hasn’t been rained out yet and will be held rain or shine. He said it is a good opportunity to have a day of free family fun enjoying the outdoors and teaching young kids how to fish.

Fishing is not the only thing people can do for free this weekend. The Department of Natural Resources calls it the Three Free Weekend, with free fishing, free state park entry and free ORV trail riding offered June 8-9.

Please note that the event date has been corrected from the print version.
