Friends Together enjoys successful first month

MIO — Oscoda County’s first and currently only cancer support group held well attended meetings during its inaugural month.

Executive Director of Friends Together Judy Burns said she was glad to see local residents taking advantage of the group early on.

“The first few meetings went really well, we had a good turnout,” Burns said. “Both weeks we had a few people from our Alpena group show up in support of the new group as well.”

Burns said that not only was attendance good, but participants were very forthcoming during the meetings. She said in her experience those who come to a group that is just starting out are generally very comfortable with sharing.

Burns said this group was started when residents from Mio who were attending Friends Together meetings in Alpena asked if she would be able to look into starting a group in Mio. She said she’s proud the group has started off so well.

“I think the most striking thing is the hardship for the (diagnosed) folks in Mio, distance is a huge barrier.” she said. “It’s a heartache for me to know treatment is an hour and a half one way for someone. To listen to folks talk about if they can make that trip healthwise, or if they can afford it.”

The Mio support group meets at the Oscoda County Council on Aging at 2 p.m. The meetings are held regularly on the second and fourth thursday of the month.
