Fatal Accident on M-72

BIG CREEK TWP. — A two-vehicle head-on collision occurred Wednesday, Jan.23 on M-72 near Mapes Road in Big Creek Township resulting in the death of a Mio couple.

According to information from the Oscoda County Sheriff’s Office, Robert Freeze, 71, of Luzerne was traveling eastbound on M-72 in a 2000 Cadillac when he collided with a 2018 Chevy Equinox head-on. 

Freeze was the only occupant of the Cadillac. Dana Esch, 72, of Mio was driving the Equinox with his wife, Suzann Esch, 60, as passenger. Dana Esch was pronounced deceased at the scene after lifesaving attempts were unsuccessful. 

Suzann Esch was transported to Munson Healthcare - Grayling Hospital and was later transported to Munson Medical Center in Traverse City, listed in serious condition at the time. She was pronounced deceased on the evening of Jan. 24 at the Munson Medical Center. 

Freeze was also transported to Munson Healthcare - Grayling Hospital and later transported to Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. He was listed in serious condition at press time. 

Assisting the Oscoda County Sheriff’s Department at the scene were the Frederick EMS and Michigan State Police accident investigators from the Alpena Post. 

The accident is still under investigation.
