Donations pay for new equipment for Lady ’Bolts

MIO — The Mio AuSable girls basketball team will soon be bouncing brand-new basketballs paid for with money from two recent donations from the community.

Coach Christina Tappan said the first donation came from retired teacher Thelma Poole. Poole was a basketball player when the rules of the game for girls were remarkably different from what they are now.

According to Tappan, Poole heard the school’s athletic funds were less than healthy and that the girls basketball team was in need of new balls.

“Thelma heard of our need and donated $60, which will cover the cost of a new basketball,” Tappan said. “Many times businesses or a service club organization will donate, but it’s pretty rare to get a community member to donate.”

The next donation came from the mBank First Federal Community Foundation, which donated $250 to the team. Tappan said putting the two donations together should allow the team to purchase at least five new balls.

Tappan said this is the second year in a row the team has gotten the donation from the community foundation, and it definitely makes a difference.

“The girls were extremely excited because many of our balls are in pretty rough shape,” she said. “Our basketballs are used for junior high basketball, JV, varsity and also during our elementary Saturday basketball program. I know our team is extremely excited to add a few new basketballs this season and we are very grateful for the support of our program.”
