Dick Nagel, 93, passed away Sept. 3, 2019, at his home in Florida.

Richard Edwin “Dick” Nagel was born Jan. 15, 1926, in Harvey, Ill., the only child of Frederick and Nola (Haney) Nagel. He grew up moving around between Chicago and Detroit while his father was a tradesman. He graduated from Lakeshore High School in St Clair Shores in 1943. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1944. After he was released from the military, he moved to Mio and helped build a cabin with his father. This is where he met the love of his life, living across the street. On Aug. 7, 1955, he married Thena Eileen “Peggy” Smith in Traverse City. They were married for more than 58 years and he wrote her a poem every year on their anniversary. Together, they raised four children. They retired in 1983 and bought a winter home in Zephyrhills, Fla. Peggy preceded him in death Jan. 25, 2014.

Surviving him are his children, Mark (Tina) Nagel, Kim (Joseph) Bernard and Staci (Jesus) Forte. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; in-laws, Owen Smith, Vonda Sedlacek and Karen Smith.

In addition to Peggy, Dick was preceded in death by his daughter, Jan Ryland; and grandson, Tyson Ryland.

Dick enjoyed working in his shop, deer hunting and fishing in his early days. He was quick-witted and loved to tease people and make them laugh.
