Annual fly-in to return to Mio this weekend

MIO — The Dennis Kauffman Memorial Airport is hosting its annual fly-in and breakfast this weekend.

The event will begin the morning of July 13, and whether residents have an airplane or not they are welcome to join in for a breakfast with local community members. Airport Manager Dave Kauffman said the event has been going on for as long as he can remember. He said one year there was an attempt to turn the event into a camping weekend, but there was more success keeping it a one-day event.

The event is simple, but Kauffman said it is always a good time.

“It’s free, so fly in, show up and eat some breakfast,” he said.

Kauffman expects roughly 20 planes to come to the event, and said there should be even more people showing up who do not have planes. He said participants will enjoy pancakes, sausage, breakfast casseroles and whatever else people bring to the early-bird meal. After participant’s hunger has been sated, they can peruse the various planes parked that flew in for the day.

The event will run from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 245 S. Mount Tom Rd.
