MIO — Veteran Jay Marble was honored for his military service by Hospice Compassus.

“Just prior to Veterans Day we had a little ceremony where we presented him with a certificate of appreciation,” hospice chaplain Rev. Giovanna Meek said. “Jay is proud, yet humble about his service,” Meek said. “He is one of those hometown heroes that exist in communities throughout America.”

He received the certificate and a homemade blanket. The national anthem was played, an American flag was pinned to his lapel and Marble shared memories of his service.

Marble served in the U.S. Air Force 1950-1954. He was an aircraft engine mechanic, serving in various locations in the U.S. including Alaska. After leaving the Air Force, Marble returned to Northern Michigan. He was a logger for most of his working life. He and his wife Macel raised their family in the Mio-Fairview area.
