Mio Lions to host annual fundraising golf outing

Posted

MIO –– The Mio Lions will host their 17th annual golf outing Aug. 19 to raise funds for community and school projects held throughout the year.

Randy Booth, chairperson of the Lions’ new member committee and special activities, said they are expecting about 72 golfers to attend this year.

“That’s what we had last year, which was our record number,” he said. “The last couple of years it’s gone up. We used to hold it the same weekend as Riverfest and our numbers were down, so we moved it up a week and we’ve been getting more people.”

Booth said that last year between $2,500 and $3,000 was raised from the outing. The goal for this year is $3,000. The registration fee to play will be $60 per golfer and the funds will go back to community service projects.

“We use them for community projects,” he said. “Normally we make a big donation to Lydia’s Gate, Leader Dogs for the Blind, Paws With a Cause and the Lions of Michigan Foundation.”

The Mio Lions also donate funds raised to projects at Mio AuSable Schools.

“We do several big fundraisers a year and we donate to a lot of charities, especially dealing with the Mio AuSable Schools, and we donate quite a bit for activities and things there,” Booth said. “A lot of it is just to put money into the ongoing things that we do every year. We do a Trout in the Classroom project where the middle schoolers raise trout and then we sponsor a River Day where they release all the trout in the river in the spring. We pay for a fluoride treatment program for the kids in school every week and other things as they come to us and when they have needs.”

This year, the Mio Lions will decided to donate the funds raised from the outing to the Lions Bear Lake Camp and Leader Dogs of Michigan.

In other news, the Mio Lions will also host a Senior Fishing Day Aug. 25 in which they will bring seniors from nursing homes within an hour’s drive to the Mio Pond at the DNR access site. Seniors will have the opportunity to take boat rides, fish from the handicap dock and receive lunch.

The golf outing is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Lunch and dinner will be provided to registered golfers. For more information on the golf outing or the Senior Fishing Day, contact Booth at 989-390-0716.
