Proulx and Frigon win 70th AuSable River Canoe Marathon

OSCODA — It once again came down to a sprint and a near photo finish, but Christophe Proulx and Samuel Frigon edged Steve Lajoie and Guillaume Blais at the finish line to win the 70th annual AuSable River Canoe Marathon Sunday morning.

Lajoie and Blais led much of the early part of the race, pulling out to a pretty big lead in the first few legs. But Proulx and Frigon were able to battle back and run with Lajoie and Blais in the last few legs before the sprint to the finish.

Proulx and Frigon finished the marathon in 14 hours, 18 minutes and 45 seconds. Officially they won by a single second. Third place went to Mike Davis and Weston Willoughby.

Andrew Triebold and Mary Schlimmer finished fourth overall and first in the mixed division, while Nick Walton and Matt Meersman finished fifth and first in the masters division. First place in the womens division went to 16th overall Rebecca Davis and Edith MacHattie.

Local racer Ted Smutek of Luzerne finished 15th with Matt Gabriel Jr. of Grayling with a time of 15 hours, 17 minutes and four seconds. Mio’s Flash Marsh and Carson Burmeister of Marquette finished 28th with a time of 15 hours, 58 minutes and 20 seconds.

As of 2 p.m., Josh Kellogg of Curran and Mike Kellogg of Montague were listed in 58th place still running, and Peggy English of Oscoda and Ellen Thompson of Lewiston were listed in 67th place still running.

Joe Thompson of Lewiston and Bryan Bearss Anchorage were credited with 75th place after leaving the race at the McKinley Bridge with an illness at eight hours, 42 minutes and 33 seconds.
