Independent audit of multiple county departments coming

MIO —- An independent audit of the departments that Cy and Jessica Wakeley have been involved with will likely happen soon after their recent resignation from the county.

Board of commissioners Chairperson LaNita Olsen broached the topic at the board’s Sept. 11 meeting.

“Some have proposed an audit of the housing department, (Economic Development Corporation) and EMS by someone other than our in-house person,” she said.

Olsen asked the board who would take on the situation and work with the Wakeleys to set up a time for this to get done. There was a clear lack of interest in taking on the matter; however, after some deliberations, Commissioner Larry Wilson reluctantly volunteered to take it on.

Olsen mentioned other issues the county may face with the Wakeleys resignation. She said the county will need to find a new housing department director by Jan. 1.

“My understanding of everything, if we don’t have a director, (the responsibility) falls on the treasurer,” Olsen said.

After the meeting Treasurer Bill Kendall said he is not sure the responsibility would fall on him, and that he had heard this for the first time at the meeting. He said he is not sure if that would be the best course of action as the type of work would be new to him.

“My recommendation would be to find someone to contract with or someone to hire to handle that instead,” he said.

Board Secretary Brenda Moore mentioned the county still has the right to dismantle the housing program. However, she said it would be a difficult process as the county still has active accounts using the program.
