Area libraries rock out with summer reading program

Posted

OSCODA COUNTY — This year the Oscoda County Library system’s summer reading program has returned with musical flair.

The theme is “Libraries Rock,” and throughout the summer there will be weekly events weaving together music and literature. Programming Clerk Beth Barron said she thinks this is a fantastic way to keep kids reading when the temperature rises.

Barron said events will alternate each week between the Mio and Fairview branches of the library for area kids, with the Mio events on Tuesdays and the Fairview ones on Wednesdays. One week kids will be reading stories and decorating music-themed cookies, and another they’ll be listening to music and explaining the stories they see in their minds, or even creating their own musicals with puppets.

In addition to those events, there will also be some larger themed ones such as a concert performed by the group Hungrytown and a play called “The Library of Rock” performed by the Acting Up Theatre Company from Grayling. This past Friday the summer reading program began with a show called “Marimba Madness.”

“The guy’s name is David Hall, and his program involved instruments,” Barron said. “He showed the kids some things, taught them some things, and involved them in his show with the instruments as well.”

Barron said while the events are a fun way to bring kids into the library, the main focus is always on summer reading. Each kid who participates in the program will receive a packet they’ll use to keep track of what they read that summer. The library will collect those packets Aug. 15 and determine who the top three readers in the program were. Those three kids will receive prizes from the library, to be announced at a later date.

For more information on how to participate or on the specific events, contact Barron at 989-826-3613.
