Appreciating our veterans as holidays approach

Yarn Angels asking for donations for gifts

Posted

MIO — The Mio Yarn Angels will be accepting donations for Christmas packages to be given to local veterans at the Mio branch of the Oscoda County Library.

Member Catina Densmore said this is the group’s attempt at giving back to those who deserve it.

“A lot of the veterans don’t really get the help they need, or are forgotten around the holidays if their families aren’t around,” Densmore said. “My grandfather was a veteran in the Vietnam or Korean war. When he came back he wasn’t given the homecoming we give (veterans) now, and that hurt. No one deserves to be forgotten.”

The Yarn Angels are asking for items such as candy, personal care items, books, puzzles, hats, gloves, blankets or other small gifts veterans may appreciate. In addition to this the angels will be crafting handmade gloves, scarves, blankets and more to include in the gifts.

If anyone is interested in helping to craft those items with the angels, Densmore said members are more than willing to help teach their methods to those interested. She also said donations of yarn would help to ensure their stock does not run out before enough gifts are finished.

Densmore said the angels believe they are doing what they can for the community with the abilities they have.

“I think it might be that we want to be a group that can use their skills to knit and crochet to benefit the county,” she said. “It’s hard to explain this, but it makes my heart happy to be able to say, ‘Here is a hat for you.’”

The donation box will be available at the library until Nov. 13. The gifts will be handed out to 45 veterans across the county once they are all finished.
