FAIRVIEW — Fairview Area Schools is one board of education member short as of Sept. 1, and currently, no one has applied to fill the vacancy for the open temporary term.

Board Trustee Dan Smith announced he was resigning during the board’s Aug. 2 meeting, effective the first of September. Smith had been on the board since June 2009, when he was selected to fill a vacancy on the board.

Superintendent James Wilcoxen told the Herald Sept. 2 that no one had completed a statement of interest form, which has to be submitted by 3 p.m. on Sept. 7 to be considered for the partial term. The partial term lasts until the Nov. 2 election.

Board President Beth Miller said interested parties can pick up statement of interest forms for the school board position from the Fairview Area Schools central office.

“There’s a little questionnaire that we always have about themselves and their interests in the board. We invite them to come to the meeting, obviously, for the interview,” Miller said.

She added that the interviews and selection could all be wrapped up Sept. 13 during the board’s next meeting.

“At the next regular board meeting, what we will do, is conduct a short interview with the applicants,” Miller said. “And if the board likes somebody, seat them.”

During the Nov. 2 General Election, voters in Fairview will vote on two four-year terms and one two-year term for the district’s board of education. County Clerk Jeri Winton said two candidates have filed for the four-year terms — Diana Danhoff, who is currently on the school board, and Randy Shantz. Current board member Anne Tompkins filed as a write-in for the partial board term.
