FAIRVIEW — After being in the Handrich family for 34 years, Fairview Lumber closed its doors for good Tuesday, Aug. 31.
After discussing it for some time, owners Ted and Lynn Handrich decided it was time to shut the business down.
“We have been thinking about it for several years,” Ted Handrich said, “We’re sad to shut the business down, but we’re excited with the prospects that lie ahead.”
Ted and Lynn are the sons of Bob Handrich, who bought out Bo-Ton Corporation, which included Fairview Lumber, on April 1, 1976. He sold most of the corporation, keeping Fairview Lumber, which has been in the family ever since.
Ted and Lynn took over ownership after Bob passed away in October 2000. They said that their years spent running and working at Fairview Lumber were very fulfilling.
“We have enjoyed it,” Ted Handrich said. “We’ve enjoyed the relationships and friendships we’ve made. It’s been fun serving our community all these years.”
Ted said he was very satisfied with the progress the business had made over the years, saying that it employed as many as 15 people in the late 1990s.
“We’ve made a tremendous amount of growth in this business since we started out,” Ted said.
Lynn Handrich said that the support they received throughout the years has been greatly appreciated.
“I would definitely like to thank the community for the support they’ve given us over the years, and thank the contractors that were supportive with us,” Lynn said. “It’s just been a true blessing.”
According to Ted, they will be auctioning off the last of the unsold materials Oct. 2, but will maintain ownership of Fairview Lumber and the property it sits on for now.
Ted said that if they are unable to sell the business, they may use the property and existing facilities to rent out storage space in the future. Until then, he said they aren’t rushing to make any decisions.
“Right now, we’re planning a fishing trip,” Ted said.
