Seeing students and parents scramble to make last-second back-to-school preparations reminds me of one year ago when President Obama announced he would welcome students back to school.
Not surprisingly, the political right hemisphere panicked. I mean, I guess it was warranted. Here was this black, Muslim, communist Nazi broadcasting his message of “Death to the Infidels” and “Don’t trust Whitey” to the masses.
Except that never happened. In fact, the last president I can really think of that tried to stuff his agenda down the throats of students was conservative superhero Ronald Reagan. Instead of simply welcoming students back to the classroom and encouraging them to work hard, he decided to preach to them his theory of Reaganomics. Here’s a snippet:
“We also find that more countries than ever before are following America’s revolutionary economic message of free enterprise, low taxes, and open world trade. These days, whenever I see foreign leaders, they tell me about their plans for reducing taxes…”
This, I’m sure, got the students very fired up for Biology and English classes. It’s odd that it didn’t include anything about how students can hit the geography books and learn the easiest way to sell arms to buddy-buddy nations like Iran, while simultaneously funding contras in Nicaragua. I’m sure he probably got a cheap laugh when he delivered one of his classic one-liners such as “I am not worried about the deficit. It is big enough to take care of itself.”
Yeah, I ripped on something Reagan did. Deal with it.
As far as I know, Obama plans once again to welcome young men and women back to the classroom. Hopefully, the right will take off their tin foil hats long enough to let the president give his generic “You never know what you can do until you try” speech that students have no doubt heard thousands of times.
But that’s doubtful. Currently, more and more Americans believe Obama is a Muslim, a rumor that’s been dispelled since 2008. Of course, when you say you support the Constitutional right of an Islamic group to build a community center four blocks from Ground Zero, and on top of that you’re not white, then the verdict is in.
So, let’s see if this year can be a little more peaceful than last. Students, parents and teachers are already stressed out as they hit the hallways again.
We don’t need some stupid political game based on lies to mire things down more than they already will be. So if Obama wants to give some boring speech, no doubt referencing the last student he met that received an against-the-odds A, just let it go.
